A little bit about Jen – @Jenreseller

Hey! I’m Jennifer, but I get called Jen. I’m from Middlesbrough in the North East of England, and I recently quit my full time marketing job to concentrate on reselling full time. I started reselling about a year ago, and it’s the best job I’ve ever had! I always assumed you ‘had’ to get the degree, you ‘had’ to get that corporate job and work your way up to be successful, but experience and self reflection has taught me that’s not what success looks like for everyone. My goal in life is to be happy, healthy and financially secure, doing what I love. After being made redundant twice in two years, my confidence in job security declined, and I started to look for other ways of making money without relying on an employer. I tried a few things over the years, but reselling has really stuck and I love it. It runs in the family, we’re a bunch of wheeler dealers on my dad’s side, so i knew the trade quite well!

How did I start reselling?

I started out by buying and selling everything I could, to test out the waters. I have settled on reselling clothing, as there’s a great market for it and they’re so easy to source, pack and store! I started my Instagram account to share my reselling journey, and any tips or tricks that would help fellow resellers. The reseller community is amazing, and everyone is so eager to help one another, despite all being in the same line of work! We want to see each other succeed, and i think we’re a bunch of very like minded people. I hope to grow my business, and I am currently growing it to 1500 listings. Then after that, who knows! I really believe in sustainable fashion, and buying second hand quality clothing, as opposed to cheaply made fast fashion. I want to really expand on this idea somehow in the future, maybe even launch my own website. I want to continue offering value on my Instagram, and I am tempted to try my hand at YouTube, although the camera does scare me a little! I’ve learnt so much over the past year about reselling, the main one being that there really is treasure everywhere, and it’s there for the taking!

Top reselling tips

My top tips to anyone wanting to start out on this reselling journey, would be to be patient, sales won’t come overnight, and you really have to be in it for the long haul to see a decent result. Don’t overpay for items at first, try selling stuff around your house, and then maybe dabble with buying cheaper items to resell to see if you enjoy it first. The last thing you want is a house full of sticky stock! One tip I wish I had started at the very beginning, is to keep an inventory system. Label everything and make sure you know where to find it, as it can soon turn into a chore when you spend half an hour looking for each item when it sells. My final tip is to not rush into reselling full-time. I might have made the jump a little too quick, but I wasn’t happy in my job and I was burnt out. I wouldn’t say no to part time work to help me fund my stock and pay bills while growing my business, as life costs can soon eat up your profits if you’re not careful, so be sensible but don’t be afraid to take the leap! And finally, enjoy the process and journey. It’s a constant learning curve, but if you’re up for the challenge, you will love it!

We hope you liked our first feature! Please let us know if you have a story you would like to share. If you would like to find out more about reselling, check out the following blog posts:
